The snake pot is of great antiquity among the Catawba and is of great cultural importance. The potters lavish much time and attention to this vessel which can be made at any size. The black snake has been sacred to the Catawba for untold centuries. The image was originally a possesion of the War Captain who managed all inter-tribal warfare.
